Foundations of Macropod Rescue – Course Overview
This introductory training course is designed to provide Wildlife Victoria–registered rescuers with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely and confidently respond to macropod incidents across the Macedon Ranges and surrounding regions.
Course Content Includes:
- Identification of common macropod species in Victoria
- Understanding macropod behaviour and stress responses
- Safe rescue and handling techniques
- Pouch checks and joey triage
- Euthanasia protocols (overview only – subject to relevant licensing)
- Transport and transfer procedures
- Legal and ethical considerations
- Reporting requirements and rescue documentation
- Self-care and safety in high-impact incidents (e.g. roadstrikes)
Trainer:
The course will be delivered by Manfred Zabinskas, a highly experienced macropod rescuer and accredited Certificate IV Trainer and Assessor.
Eligibility:
Participants must be current, active rescuers registered with Wildlife Victoria.
Support & Mentoring:
Newly trained macropod rescuers will have access to a mentorship program, pairing them with experienced volunteers for ongoing guidance and support.
Certification:
All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion, which will be recognised by Wildlife Victoria as evidence of formal macropod rescue training.
Please note:
Completion of this course is a prerequisite for participating in future Captive Bolt Training.
