Wildlife-Friendly Living

Simple changes to make your property safe and welcoming for native wildlife

Creating safe spaces

Our community plays a vital role in protecting and supporting the native animals of the Macedon Ranges. Small changes to your property can make a significant difference in wildlife safety and habitat quality.

Off topic? Whether it’s knowing how to stop for an injured kangaroo on the road or what to do with orphaned wildlife, we believe knowledge saves lives. [Emergency Help guide]

Essential wildlife-friendly practices

Six key areas where you can make your property safer and more welcoming for native wildlife.

Fencing

Support safe movement of wildlife by using fencing that prevents entrapment and allows animals to pass through.
  • Avoid barbed wire at animal height
  • Use plain wire or wildlife-friendly mesh
  • Leave gaps or low-clearance sections for small animals

Water sources

Help wildlife stay hydrated by offering clean, safe access to water — especially during heatwaves.
  • Use shallow bowls with rocks or branches for escape
  • Provide multiple water points around your property
  • Clean and refill regularly to prevent disease

Garden Guide

Create habitat for native animals by keeping natural elements like logs, shrubs, and mulch.
  • Preserve fallen logs and branches
  • Plant native shrubs, grasses, and trees
  • Build small brush piles for reptiles, birds, and insects

Pet Saftey

Protect native wildlife by keeping cats contained and dogs supervised — especially at dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active.
  • Keep cats indoors or in secure outdoor enclosures
  • Walk dogs on-lead, especially near bushland or reserves
  • Supervise pets in gardens and wildlife-prone areas

Feeding Native Wildlife

Bird netting

Prevent injury by using only wildlife-safe netting over fruit trees and plants.
  • Use white netting with holes smaller than 5mm
  • Avoid black or loosely woven mesh
  • Check regularly for sagging or trapped animals
